Things to do for Wednesday, 10/3

Thursday

Abeka (Spelling/Reading/Phonics)

  • Lesson  in 31 Curriculum Guide on Phonics Only
  • Lesson 32 in Spelling and Phonics 
    • The kids are REALLY enjoying reading from their readers aloud (go figure!), and we finished the book "Fun with Pets" in class.  You can skip today's AM reading lesson and pick up with the PM reading of pages 2-3 in "TipToes".
    • Corresponding workbook pages listed in Curriculum Guide for each lesson.
    • If you are following the Abeka spelling lessons, you will be assessing the list today.  You can do check their spelling verbally or in writing.  Introduce list #4.  Each Wednesday, we will be reviewing their spelling list in class.  If it is the first time they have seen the list, they will most likely have trouble with the review game. Most of them did great with the list 3 review yesterday!


Handwriting

  • Turn to page 41  in your workbook and complete Day 1. 
  • Now that we have completed the alphabet letter by letter, we will be moving on to weekly handwriting lessons.  For each lesson, you will be doing Day 1 on Thursdays, Day 2 on Fridays, Day 3 on Mondays, and then you will be writing the Bible verse for Day 4 onto a border sheet from the back of the book on Tuesdays. These border sheets are like "quizzes".  Take your time and do your best-- make them look great!  Bring them in on Wednesdays to display them!
     

Grammar

  • Lesson 26 with parents.
  • They are doing much better with common and proper nouns!  There is still confusion on brand names, such as Oreo, Lego, etc.

 

Spanish

  • Do pages 12-13 in your workbook.

  • Choose a border sheet from the back of your handwriting book.  Either tear it out or make a copy of it.  Take the Bible verse from Lesson 1, Day 4, and copy it very carefully onto the border sheet.  Color it and bring it to class tomorrow!  This is like your weekly handwriting quiz, so do your very best!

  • Be sure to finish your writing.  Do your best! We will show it off in class!

  • Take out your writing assignment sheet from yesterday.  Think about your favorite hiding spot.  Write all about it!  Use complete sentences and make sure to use your best handwriting!  These will go in your writing folder, and we are going to hand them up to show the class!

    • In class tomorrow, we will review spelling list #3. For those of you not choosing to use the Abeka curriculum, it will be best if your child is not seeing the spelling list for the first time.  It causes distractions and makes it difficult to teach the children as a group.  This class has been scheduled at the beginning of the day to address this issue.
    • In class tomorrow, we will be discussing the following concepts learned from at-home materials.  For those not using the Abeka curriculum, you may want to touch on these so that your child is not hearing them for the first time.
      • The definition of a compound word.
      • The letters l, f, and s often show up in pairs at the end of short-vowel words, such as in doll, small, miss, hill, etc.

      • Review the poem, "The Caterpillar" from lesson 2. We are going to recite them on Wednesday for our videos!
      • Draw 3 pictures that illustrate this poem.  Make them BIG and BRIGHT (dark colors work best... don't color too lightly!).  Write your names on the back and be sure to bring them in on Wednesday.

        • Review your packet on Mesopotamia.
        • Do the "Words to Know" activity.  For this, you will first need to cut out the words ziggurat, flax, grains, and city-state.  Also, cut out (and color, if you would like) the pictures.
        • Cut along the dotted lines on your page, so you can fold the flaps over.
        • Glue one word in each box on the Words to Know page.
        • On the back of the flap, glue the picture for each word.
        • Write a short definition for each word. (modify, as needed)

        • Find Sumer and shade it lightly green.  Egypt and Sumer are the two countries where people first learned to write.

          • What sort of food did nomads eat?
          • Where did nomads sleep?
          • Why did nomads move from place to place?
          • What does "nomad" mean?
          • Why was the Fertile Crescent a good place to live?
          • Why was it called "fertile"?
          • What was it shaped like?
          • What did the first farmers grow?
          • Did farmers move from place to place like nomads?
          • How did farmers water their crops?
          • Did the farmers still hunt wild animals?
          • What did the farmers build their houses out of?
          • How did they protect their village?
        • Use this map to do the following:
          • Find and circle the town of Jericho.
          • Trace the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in blue.  
          • Lightly shade the seas blue.
          • Use a green crayon or colored pencil to color in the area between and around the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers.  This is the Fertile Crescent, and some nomads moved here because it was so easy to find food.
        • If you want to, you can color the coloring page of A Farmer Using a Shaduf.
